AI’s Blind Spots: What It Still Can’t Do

Here is an interesting case that's a very good example of the limits of chatbots. In this case, there was a very large law firm called Morgan and Morgan. You may have heard of them—you've probably seen their advertising, their billboards. They're one of the largest personal injury attorneys in the country. They are located in Florida and also handle employment law and a lot of high-end cases. In this instance, their law firm was using AI—a chatbot—allegedly to automate some of their casework.

What happened was this chatbot had created and cited some fictional cases that weren't real. In lawsuits, you often see references to other cases that are relevant, and those are used to support the arguments proposed by the plaintiff. In this instance, Morgan and Morgan used an AI or chatbot, and some of these cases weren't real. Because of that, it created a problem. It was an error—it wasn’t their fault, and they didn’t mean to do it—but it was a mistake in how the chatbot worked.

This is a good example of the limitations—at least right now—of where chatbots and AI may not be completely developed to the level of expertise or excellence required. If you're using AI in your business, you want to make sure that you are double-checking the quality control of where these chatbots are getting their information. It’s important that all outputs are still QCed by actual humans before they go into production.
