Who Really Loves EVs? Unpacking the Hype and Reality
Download MP3Okay, here's a serious question: who actually does like electric vehicles? Is there anybody that actually likes them?
In today's news alone — just today's news — there are three stories that show that dealers, manufacturers, and consumers all don’t like EVs. Now granted, it's anecdotal; these are just sample responses. But take a look at this Buick dealer.
If you're a Buick dealer, you’re a car dealership with a building and a franchise that you’ve put a lot of time, money, and resources into. You’re now being told that you have to sell electric vehicles. Half the dealers said, "Nah, we don't want to be a dealer anymore." They don’t want to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars to prepare to sell and service electric vehicles, so they said, "Nope, we're out. We'd rather not be a dealer. We quit." Half of Buick dealers took a buyout.
And look, Buick is not a very high-performing brand, so you’d think, "Hey, anything could be better than what they have now. They don’t have a lot of cars."
What about the manufacturers? Well, this isn't the first time we’ve seen this happen. Another major car manufacturer has hit the pause on EV development. Ford did it before, and now another major manufacturer is saying, "Hey, we’re going to slow down a little bit on this EV thing." This time, the news came from Audi. Audi is saying, "You know what? EVs — maybe not all that. We’re going to take a pass on diving headfirst into electric vehicles."
What about consumers? Well, here’s one example: someone had a 2024 Chevrolet Blazer electric vehicle, and it got stranded after a mere 28 hours in their possession. It was probably a rental car — actually, it had a manufacturer's plate, so it was a test vehicle from the factory.
So, consumers, dealers, and manufacturers all have some complaints about electric vehicles.
The question remains: who actually likes electric vehicles? Do you? I know you have an opinion about that. Put it in the comments below.
