The next time that you're dealing with the DMV and finding it difficult to work on a title or get answers from them, uh, one of the things to realize is all of the inconveniences and bureaucracy that the DMV throws in front of you and gives you the runaround is for a reason. And a lot of times has to do with preventing fraud. You know, they want to make sure that it's difficult to get a title to make sure that you're not trying to get a title for a vehicle you're not supposed to have. you're they're protecting the prior owner.

In the case of export vehicles, many of our clients run into difficulties with exporting a vehicle without the right paperwork and they figure, "Hey, I'm exporting it. What's the big deal?" Well, here's why. A lot of vehicles that are stolen or have other types of encumbrances on them, maybe leans, maybe junk or parts only, uh are used as export assets because they figure, well, if I don't have to get a title here, I can just export it and bring it to some other country.

Well, unlike other types of commodities, the Customs and Border Protection, CBP, does inspections on vehicles when they're being exported. Usually, customs only import uh inspects items when they're coming in. If you ship a truckload of bananas or a container of bananas into the country, they're going to check it in customs to make sure it's safe, make sure you have the right paperwork, make sure everything's legit. Why would they care about things being exported? Because it's leaving the country. They shouldn't care about it.

Well, vehicles they do because if a vehicle leaves the country and it's stolen or has a lean or something else, they're going to want to stop that in its tracks. And this is a way for people to get a vehicle that they've obtained improperly. stolen leans, parts only, junk in a way that they don't have the right paperwork to get some value from it because they can ship it. If you have a vehicle that's a junk or parts only, the vehicle normally has to be taken apart into major component parts into 18 different components before it can be shipped. Uh if it has a lean on it, you have to get permission from a lean holder. So, there's a lot of different rules and requirements.

So, you want to make sure that you go through the right process to get the right ownership documents so you can legally title and register that vehicle.
