Timber Trouble: Why Lumber Mills Are Shutting Down Amid Price Drops
Download MP3Here's another example of where a lumber mill is reducing its output because of pricing. Canfor, which is one of the largest Canadian mills, is reducing their production, called curtailments. This is because the lumber pricing going out the door has dropped so much that, in some cases, they can't produce the lumber profitably for the price the market is willing to pay.
As a result, they’re starting to furlough employees, they’re starting to not purchase raw log materials, and they’re curtailing their mill output.
What are your thoughts on curtailment? Is it affecting your market, affecting your prices, or making it more difficult for you to get materials for your build packages?
