Okay artificial intelligence is going to do a lot of great things over the coming decades in fact just this morning I was watching a piece on one of the local or actually National Business News sites that was talking about how artificial intelligence is going to start curing cancer and recognizing cancer this is a great thing but what are the downsides just like any other technology if you build something that's powerful it's going to make both good things and bad things more powerful when they invented um gunpowder and bullets it made protecting and defense better but it also made bad people have more power AI is going to be the same thing certainly artificial intelligence will make our jobs easier it will make professionals be able to do more stuff cure cancer solve major problems do finances but what are the potential risk and what should you know about as an individual as a consumer as a citizen.

Well here are two examples one of which is propaganda this is an article from The Wall Street Journal there's another article about how there's a disturbing secret that's within AI we'll get to that in a minute but here is an article where a person using a laptop computer built a self-running propaganda machine for a 100 bucks that would create thousands of false political stories and were impressive you could affect a lot of things using AI if that one person just wanted to write stories from scratch you're not going to be able to do enough to move the needle on influence but if you can use AI to write thousands of stories know where to place them know where to post them read the feedback to know what's effective write another batch of stories that addresses that feedback you could really move the needle on people's opinions about politics about marketing about products Services.

What's another downside well um it says the trend is worrying it's a little bit of clickbait but there is something to this article the problem is AI data centers are guzzling energy and water at alarming rates well what does that mean guzzling energy that means is using up electricity AI will use 8% of global energy by 2030 that's only 5 years away so 8% of the electricity is going to go to AI we're already in in some places having black outs we're having um electrical shortages in addition to that they use a lot of water well we just saw the news where there was some water problems in Los Angeles where they couldn't put out fires data centers use 11 million gallons of water in one year just in Iowa and that's going to be something where the sources of this water sources of electricity are going to have to be uh attended to.
