The AI Trust Trap: How They’re Convincing You to Believe in Artificial Intelligence

Download MP3

Artificial intelligence is coming whether we like it or not. One of the questions that's kind of unspoken is: how do we trust AI, and how do we know when we should trust the results of AI and be skeptical? It's a great article that came out here in Slashdot about what the criteria are for deciding to trust artificial intelligence results, being skeptical, or having to double-check them.

Right now, many people use AI or artificial intelligence as kind of like a second opinion. You get your primary information from other sources—traditional, historical sources—and use AI as a way to get a second opinion or to point you at other primary sources. But at what point do we, as humans, decide to just take AI results or artificial intelligence at face value and blindly follow? Or maybe that never happens.

Do you think at some point there will be a backlash to AI, where people want to go back to dealing with human beings rather than AI? Not sure. Nobody knows at this point. It probably depends on how good AI is at providing quality answers. But then again, if you're asking a question you don't know the answer to, how do you know if what AI said is the right answer? You have nothing to compare it to.

Maybe experts can come in and compare what they know to the AI answers. But trusting artificial intelligence will be a major factor in how it is deployed in business, consumer uses, and even personal life. It also has the risk of doing some damage—giving out wrong information before any humans realize it. The information could be out there, but then again, how much do you trust human beings? Human beings can make mistakes too.

The question is: at what point will confidence in artificial intelligence eclipse what we have in human beings? I know you have an opinion about this. Let us know in the comments below.
