The 25-Year Rule: How to Legally Import Classic Cars into the U.S.
Download MP3So, what is the 25-year import exemption rule? This is a rule that allows vehicles that are 25 years old or older to be imported without all of the same import requirements as typically required from EPA, DOT, and all the other customs requirements. What that means is you can import certain um enthusiast vehicles without having to have them meet all of the standards to be legally imported to the US. Customs has a very long list of requirements to import certain vehicles.
Now, the 25-year requirement only excludes and exempts vehicles from the US customs requirements. It does not require states to exempt vehicles from their titling and registration. So, what you may run into is your vehicle legally being imported, but your state not allowing to be registered. We'll talk about that here in a minute. But the fact that it is now 2025 means there are some additional vehicles that are tremendously interesting vehicles that now can be imported into the US without having to go through the stringent import requirements.

Toyota Calina GT. It's a all-wheel drive rally type wagon. uh which is a tremendous uh vehicle to put on the road. It's kind of like a Subaru WRX, although it's a wagon. And you can get those for, you know, in the low teens, $10 to $12,000. This is a great vehicle. Uh and it's something that um you're going to start seeing more of these on the road because up until this year, you couldn't bring them to this country.
There's also, speaking of Subaru, the WRX Type STI, which is a very upgraded version of the WRX um with uh 276 horsepower. You have the Mitsubishi Lancer, which is a a very very interesting vehicle. This is going to be more expensive. You're going to see these, you know, in the 30 to $40,000 range. Um, here's another wagon. Honda Accord SIR wagon all-wheel drive. This is a cool car from the late 90s, early 2000s that now you can import.
So, once you take a look at the new u allowances for these Japanese imports, you can see which ones might be of interest. Just make sure that you're going to be able to get it through the titling process in your state before you start shelling out a whole bunch of money to get one of these cars through customs because customs is only the first step before it goes into uh a situation where you can put it on the road and be driving it.
