Smart Guardian: The Device That Prevents Home Fires Before They Start
Download MP3Being both a licensed building general contractor and also a licensed insurance agent, we see that a fire in your house is probably one of the most risky and problematic losses you could incur. Not only is it going to burn down your house, but you're going to lose a lot of your furnishings—things that are irreplaceable.
In the past, we've recommended doing a scan of your electrical wiring. Most fires in homes are caused by electrical wiring, and there are some thermal scans you can put up against your walls to see if your wires are warm or heating up. Many fires are caused by arcs, shorts, or even high resistance behind the walls that you can't see. Maybe a wire came loose on an outlet. Maybe one of your plugs, after you plugged it in and out many times, moved a little bit and started to crack a wire.
When that happens, it's almost like your toaster—when there's more resistance going through a wire, it heats up. If a wire is not 100% connected and has a little crack in it, there's more resistance, and that can create heat. On your switches, maybe one of the wires on the switch—the screw—came loose and is starting to heat up. Maybe there's a short somewhere. A lot of times, you don't see these things until the heat gets so intense that it'll ignite the framing or the studs on your wall and catch your house on fire.

Now, back to your video on fire safety. It used to be that we would recommend scanning your house to see if anything was heating up. Well, now there's a great device—you can see it here on the screen—that you just plug into your house, and it will constantly monitor the electrical flow to see if there is a fire hazard.
This is a game-changer. This is not something you have to do once or twice a year with expensive equipment or hire a contractor. You can actually get this tool, plug it into your house, and it will constantly monitor it. We're going to get these for all of our homes and monitor them on a regular basis. But we thought it would be good for consumers to see this as a way to keep track of their homes.
Look, even if you get paid 100% from your insurance company after your house burns down, you're still going to be living someplace else for 8 to 9 months or even a year. You're going to lose a lot of irreplaceable belongings. You’re going to put yourself, your family, and your pets at risk. This is a good way to avoid all of that with a tremendously clever device.
