Job Wars: The Impact of AI on Employment
Download MP3Are you still not sure how artificial intelligence is going to affect employment? Do you think your job is safe? Do you think any job is safe? Well, let's take a look at a few headlines just from today. The tech sector is pouring billions into AI but keeps laying off humans. That's fact. How many? Well, according to The Guardian, AI will affect 40% of jobs and probably worsen inequality. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says 40 % of jobs will be affected. A year ago, they were saying it might affect 10% of jobs. It quadrupled in 12 months. What are they going to be saying in another year? The IMF also says your job may disappear altogether. Only half the jobs will be negatively affected. Okay, um, that's more than 40%. Now they're saying 50% on the same day. Which is it?
What industries are looking at AI? How about building cars? Robots are looking better in Detroit as labor costs rise. Well, think about it: if labor costs are part of the reason for going to AI and Detroit automakers are looking at it, what else has labor? Pretty much every industry. Restaurants. Landscaping. Contracting. It's all labor. The more you can put AI into it, the lower your labor costs. In many industries, labor is more than 50% of the cost factor of a product. Sure, they don't have robots yet that are really good at certain things. They can build cars, and they can do other types of automated tasks. It's just a matter of time before it starts affecting 40% of your jobs.
