So what are the instructions for getting a duplicate title for a vehicle. First start out by identifying the correct state where to request the duplicate It's not where you are now It's where the last title came from. Make sure that the name on your duplicate title application is exactly as it was on the prior title meaning that if there's a junior or senior or married name or two people it's exactly as it was on the last title. If there was a lien on the last title make sure you have a lien release fill that form out Very very carefully. If for some reason you make one small error or cross something out they're going to kick it back. When you finish filling out the form make yourself a copy or two Because you might have to submit that to them And if you need to refer to it later having a copy is helpful. In the person is faster than by mail. It might be more convenient just to pop it in the mail and not have to wait in line at DMV But if you go in person you might be able to get the title of the same day. But even if not you'll identify any problems immediately rather than having to wait to get a notice by mail. So a duplicate title is a very straightforward process It usually costs two to $10.
