Digital forensics is a form of investigation that looks for evidence, documents, and files on electronic devices. Now, an electronic device could be something like a cell phone, a mobile device, or even an older school kind of flip phone. Some people try to use these for, um, drop phones or burner phones, maybe even like a tablet. Some people use computer tablets, which could be actual computers like a laptop or a desktop. Even other electronic devices like the telematics in your vehicle, your smart devices in your home, your routers, and your Wi-Fi devices are all electronic devices that carry records of data, documents, and even photos. Sometimes they carry records of connections, like your router might keep track of what websites you go to.

Digital forensics as you can see from this funny little cartoon here from a Lego um you know a Lego meme is the act of extracting records from these types of devices you're going to extract data if it's a mobile device maybe you extracting uh text messages photos if it's telematics in your vehicle you're extracting the data from that vehicle the GPS location that it when it started stopped you could even tell when doors were opened if somebody was sitting in Seat pressure sensors on the seat when the brakes are applied what radio stations many times it'll also connect to your Apple iPlay or Android auto and keep track of that data um other electronic devices like the thermostat in your uh house or your office when the temperature went up and down when lights came on and off most of the time what people are looking for is evidence of activity did somebody send a text message was there photo attached was their phone numbers called uh were there other apps like WhatsApp or other secret type of communications did messages get exchanged through gaming platforms.

Digital forensics is where a licensed investigator will go into these devices extract out records and give a report about what happened with that device for a certain period of time there could even be uh digital forensics performed on um SD cards you know the little chips that people put into you know um things like GoPros or other devices even deleted files many times can be extracted because deleting a file doesn't usually actually take the file off of the device it just takes away the reference to it it's kind of like if you went to the library and we going to look up a book and you looked at the index where the book is on the Shelf when you delete the file you're not taking the book off their shelf you're just deleting the listing of where it is so digital forensics many times can restore some of these files maybe Cloud devices Cloud records sometimes even phone systems if you have a voicemail many times that voicemail is stored as a file on a computer and when you delete your voicemail you're not actually deleting the file you're just deleting the reference to it so that file may still be there many types of Records can be re uh restored from digital forensics.

If you have electronic records and evidence that you think would be helpful to you, contact us to see if digital forensics can help recover some of these files and bring them back to life to help you understand the facts of your case or to know with peace of mind really what's going on.
