AI Just Took Another Job—Who's Next?
Download MP3Okay, just when you thought your job was safe from artificial intelligence or AI, here's somebody who has invented an AI-powered convenience store. It's a completely glass-walled convenience store where you can see all the products, but when you buy something, there's a little robot arm that puts it in the window. Let's take a quick look at this video. See how it just picks the item, puts it in the window. You want a drink, it puts it in the window and then it goes down to one of these little shelves underneath and you can get whatever you want.
Now, granted, it's really not much more than a fancy vending machine. However, it does give more access to things. It does allow buyers to get more than you can find in a vending machine. And it starts to eliminate the need for clerks in convenience stores. So, that's a pretty low-level job. And if it can do this, what other jobs can it take?
Do you feel like this is going to be a threat to employment for everyday blue-collar workers? Is it going to replace wait staff servers at restaurants? Is it going to replace possibly even warehouse workers even more than it already is? AI can read labels. It can identify products. It can understand what humans are asking for. So, is this better for the future to make things easier or is it just going to cut jobs and make us all less wealthy?
